Day 11 – Dawson City!

Mileage today: 219
Total Miles: 5054

Made it to the D2D!  A beautiful day in the Yukon!  By 10 am , the temps were pushing 70 degrees F and the sun was shining!  Warmest day since passing into Canada. Really a great ride from Carmacks to Dawson City – Relaxing 6 hr ride for a change.  cruised along and enjoyed the warmth – no rain – great road.

Big, open country

Speaking of the road – for those riders out there – very rough surface.  Tires that last 8,000-10,000 miles in the US only make it 5,000 – 6,000 up here.  In fact, the tires that I just put on before leaving are pretty well shot – need new ones in Anchorage before leaving for home. This picture is a not so close-up of the road surface.  This, combined with a heavily loaded bike do a number on the tires.  Anyway, needed to change the tires for the off-road portion of the ride – see below…

Took time to smell, or should I say photograph the flowers today.  It is hard to visualize the wide open and sometimes barren landscape peppered with bunches of colorful wild flowers.  I took a bunch of pictures of the various flowers I saw – might be able to go back and identify them as time permits.  Unfortunately, while crawling around taking pictures, my cell phone must have dropped out of my pocket – somewhere in the Yukon…  The most expensive day of the trip so far.  Anyway, here are some pictures:

Arctic Lupine

All of these shots were taken within a couple of hundred yards of each other.

Enough flowers, I also ran into this guy while crawling in the bushes.

FInally, when I got to Dawson City, some new knobby tires were waiting for me – needed to tackle the dirt/gravel of the Haul Rd to Prudhoe Bay on Sunday.  Rides much differently now.  Have to get out on the trail a bit to get used to it.

Motorcycling in Alaska/Alaska Photography

For those interested in the spirit of those who ride motorcycles to and in Alaska, you really should check out the ADVRIDER.com  forum – kind of a meeting place for adventurers on 2 wheels.    My favorite is the Alaska Regional forum – lots of

Jack "Alcan Rider "

information, stories and general jabbering about riding in Alaska.  My favorite contributor is Alcan Rider and his frequent posts, always well written and frequently enhanced with great photos of the Alaska countryside.  Many of Jack’s photos were used on this blog (with permission) – great stuff…  Check out Jack’s SmugMug Photos

Interestingly, the ADVRIDER site is hosted by the same folks who developed and manage smugmug.com – millions of great photos.

If you get the chance, turn off the TV, grab a beer and sit down and poke around this site with its forum and photos – pretty neat.
